A most delightful Saturday

The day started with the Christmas tree activities and first round of the basketball tournament (described below).

Then Yosef came and picked us so that we could visit his family in their home.  They live on the outskirts of Addis Ababa...something like a suburb.  I'll describe the building boom in another post.  Here I want to show you the coffee ceremony.

Ethiopia, of course, grows coffee.  Quite good coffee.  And if Pacific Northwesterners think they take their coffee seriously, I wonder if they're this committed to it.

First, light this brazier.

So that you can roast the beans.

 Yosef, roasting the beans.

Meskerem ground the beans, then put them in this clay pot--
sorry, don't know the Ethiopian name for it.
 Then she added cold water.
And brewed it on the fire.

 And Meskerem served it.
And, believe it or not, this is not cultural sensitivity...
I've enjoyed this coffee...each of the 3 times I've had it!

Yosef said they do this on Sundays, after church, and special occasions...like us coming over?!
It takes some time, obviously.  So normally they use a regular ol' drip coffee machine like we all have at home.
